When the Tokyo Revengers manga reached over 20 million copies printed (physically) and sold (digitally) in early June, Mantan Web looked at why the series was exploding in popularity, releasing an exposé on why the series was reaching a new audience. Though just as the article was released, the official Twitter account of the manga series revealed that the Tokyo Revengers manga had reached over 25 million copies printed (physically) and sold (digitally).
The update of the print run (including digital sales) for the series came about just as Tokyo Revengers got another re-print in time for the live-action film to be released.
Mantan Web spoke to a representative from Kadokawa's sales department, who said the increase in sales came when the company renewed the covers of the series, focusing more on the "shonen manga-ness" of the series rather than the yankee aspects, which was only appealing to men in their 30s and 40s who used to read yankee manga in their youth. Not only did sales increase in the young male category, but the series saw young women picking up Tokyo Revengers in droves, which was unexpected.
Sales of the series are apparently three times higher than last year's forecast.
The TV anime adaptation of Tokyo Revengers is streamed on Crunchyroll every Saturday, who describes the series as such:
Takemichi Hanagaki is a freelancer that's reached the absolute pits of despair in his life. He finds out that the only girlfriend he ever had in his life that he dated in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, had been killed by the ruthless Tokyo Manji Gang. The day after hearing about her death, he's standing on the station platform and ends up being pushed over onto the tracks by a herd of people. He closes his eyes thinking he's about to die, but when he opens his eyes back up, he somehow had gone back in time 12 years. Now that he's back living the best days of his life, Takemichi decides to get revenge on his life by saving his girlfriend and changing himself that he'd been running away from.
